Yama, the God of death, endings and mortality, teaches us to let go and surrender to the flow of life – but he also inspires us to conserve our prana through healthy self-restraint. The cosmic force of Bharani nakshatra is called apabharani shakti, “power to take things away with the waters”. Like the powerful waves of the ocean, it takes the things away from us and carries them further.

It inspires us to let go of our attachments. Where there’s an end, there’s always a new beginning. And although the God of death is the presiding deity of this nakshatra, its symbol is actually the womb, through which we are born into this world. “As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.”
