What is Saturn in Revati Nakshatra Really Trying To Teach Us

Any nakshatra that Saturn transits through points to an area of our lives where we need to develop greater maturity—both individually and collectively, as humanity. Here goes a little different, more embodied perspective on Saturn’s recent journey through Revati nakshatra.

Important Transits

Revati is the last nakshatra of the zodiac, located at the end of sidereal Pisces, the original twelfth house. According to the Vayu Purana, it also happens to be Saturn’s birth nakshatra, which makes Saturn’s current transit through this lunar mansion particularly interesting.

Shani is the planet of closure, endings, and forgiveness, which makes it easy to draw a connection between the two. But there is a deeper life lesson that Saturn is teaching here.

The sign of Pisces, where Saturn currently dwells in the sidereal zodiac and which has Revati as its last lunar mansion, represents our spirituality in many ways, as well as how we embody it. Saturn, the planet representing our root chakra, teaches us here to become more mature and grounded in our spirituality and to create a bridge between our spiritual beliefs and lived experience. As the planet of a down-to-earth approach, help, and service, Shani also teaches us here how to truly embody spiritual ideals, such as compassion, by actively contributing to making this world a better place. And it’s not always as romantic or pleasant task as we would like it to be.

How We Treat Those Who Cannot Speak

Pisces is a mute sign, and as such, it also represents all those who are voiceless, such as animals. This is particularly expressed in Revati nakshatra.

The presiding deity of Revati is Pushan—the gentlest and most nurturing aspect of the Sun god—often portrayed as a shepherd who guides lost souls and animals back to their path. Pushan, “the toothless” god, thus embodies the idea of nonviolence and the protection of the weak—especially animals, who are also voiceless. The Taittiriya Brahmana, which describes all the nakshatras, their presiding deities, their powers (shakti), and the desires of those archetypal gods, states that the desire of Pushan, the deity presiding over Revati nakshatra, is specifically to become “the lord of the animals.”

It makes perfect sense for Saturn to choose this specific lunar mansion as his birth star. Saturn represents all minorities, marginalised communities, and everyone we look down upon—and who is more marginalised and systemically oppressed in our time than animals, who cannot even speak for themselves?

As a wise character from a popular book series once said: “If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.”

There could not be a more Saturnian truth than that.

Dog Revolutions

A lot can be said about a nation simply by looking at how it treats its dogs.

I have always found it fascinating that the Mahabharata, the greatest epic of mankind and a symbolic treatise on karma, begins with the story of a dog (and a curse received because of the abuse inflicted on a dog), and ends with a dog: the powerful story of Yudhishthira’s final journey, which I wrote about earlier this year (in this article). The beginning and the end show us two radically different approaches: cruelty and compassion. And we get to see the outcome of both.

This year has been especially intense in the context of animal welfare. Dogs have made it into newspapers and headlines in more than one country: the forced removal of community dogs from the streets of India; shootings in Morocco to “clean the streets” before the World Cup; Turkey and Romania forcing street dogs into overcrowded shelters; laws against certain breeds imposed in the UK; and probably the biggest success story—the rescue of 1,500 beagles from Ridglan Farms, where they were tortured for the sake of animal testing. What made people particularly outraged about the Ridglan case is the fact that many volunteers who helped save these dogs are currently facing more serious charges than terrorists and rapists. Read that again.

This is not a small case. People are slowly waking up. The suffering that they could easily ignore before, as long as the dogs remained behind closed walls and no one heard their screams, can no longer be ignored.

I truly believe that, through all these dramatic stories, Saturn in Revati nakshatra is teaching us one very simple thing right now: do not turn your gaze away just because the suffering of another makes you feel uncomfortable. Help those who cannot speak for themselves. Spirituality and compassion are meant to be lived and experienced, not merely talked about. And that is what Saturn always stands for: doing the uncomfortable thing for the greater good. This is not just the choice that is faced by activists – this is the choice that Saturn will call us all to make, especially now, when he is about to start his retrograde movement.

Putting Compassion into Practice

When an older stray dog approached me with a wagging tail a little less than a year ago, I didn’t know where it would lead me. I just saw a pair of honest, loving eyes and the natural response was to help in any small way possible. Today, we are both actively helping to make life easier for the community dogs in our neighbourhood, bringing them food daily, getting them sterilised, and giving them the medical help they deserve. It has become one of the most fulfilling parts of our lives. (You can read a bit more of the backstory here.)

Being actively engaged in helping those who have no one is not always easy. It feels messy and exhausting most of the time. The perfect solution is not always available. But Saturn doesn’t expect a perfect solution from any of us—only a simple human gesture of compassion and an effort to ease another’s pain. Because what is spirituality, truly, if it is not built on compassion towards all living beings?

Right now, Saturn is teaching each and every one of us that spirituality has to be embodied and lived. We can no longer get away with simply repeating lovely-sounding ideas. And these lessons may be felt even more deeply when Saturn will start moving retrograde.

As astrologers, it is not only our duty to look up towards the stars, but also to truly learn and embody what they are telling us about the Earth and our evolution as human beings — to become a bridge between the sky and the Earth. We must remind people, over and over again, that the law of karma makes no exceptions. We are accountable for our actions. And we create karma not only through what we do, but also through what we don’t do.

At the end of the day, we are not asked to do much — but only to leave the world a slightly better place than it was when we found ourselves in it.

Honouring Saturn in Revati Nakshatra

If you feel that your Saturn needs uplifting in your birth chart, consider honouring the life lessons he is pointing all of us towards during this period. Choose cruelty-free alternatives for your cosmetics, cleaning products, and food. Learn about the brands that still test on animals. When you see a hungry animal, offer a meal. Consider donating to a local animal welfare NGO or virtually adopting a rescued Ridglan beagle or another rescued animal. There are endless ways to serve — and not all of them require a budget.

Being personally involved in stray dog welfare here in Mauritius, I can assure you that sometimes as little as 20 dollars can make all the difference in the lives of those who have no one else. I feel blessed that, through our work, we can dedicate at least part of our time and income to helping these souls. And I wish others could know what an incredible feeling it is to make a dog wag its tail again.

With Saturn moving through Revati nakshatra while simultaneously being aspected by exalted Jupiter, as well as the remarkable planetary alignment coming this month, it is my great hope that we, as humanity, have finally reached the stage of taking greater responsibility for our choices and making more compassionate ones for the future.
