Kalachakra & The Wheel of Time Within the Heart
“As it is in the outer world, so it is in the body; as it is in the body, so it is in the consciousness.” - Kalachakra Tantra 1.6

It is said that in the beginning of Time, when the Cosmic Being, Narayana, desired to create the worlds, an 8-petalled lotus flower (ashtadala padma) emanated from His navel. That lotus flower was called Kalamaya – “that, which is made of time” – and its 8 petals represented 8 directions of the world, or 8 dimensions of existence. On that lotus was seated Brahma, the Divine Creator, who thus began to create the worlds.
But there is a Divine Creator seated inside of each one of us, too. And we co-create our own reality together with Him.
Yogic Upanishads (such as Yoga Shikha Upanishad, Dhyanabindu Upanishad or Hamsa Upanishad) teach us that this 8-petalled lotus flower is, in fact, located in each and everyone’s spiritual heart.
“In the seat of the heart is a lotus of eight petals. In its centre is jīvātmā of the form of light and atomic in size, moving in a circular line. In it is located everything. It knows everything. It does everything.”
– Dhyanabindu Upanishad
Depending on the different chambers of our being (or different petals of the lotus) that the jivatma (embodied soul) visits, our energy and mood change accordingly. The directions or types of energies towards which the soul is attracted in different moments in time can be tracked through the Kalachakra Nakshatra Mandala in Vedic Astrology – a directional nakshatra diagram, which was designed not just as a predictive tool, but a tool for introspection and contemplation.
My Gurudev says: “You are not separate. You are part of the whole divine existence. You are an aspect of this divine existence itself.” I found Kalachakra Mandala to be one of those rare tools in Vedic Astrology who truly help us relate to this truth and feel like a part of cosmic existence, with all its ebb and flow.
The first class of our Kalachakra Nakshatra Mandala workshop begins this Saturday. All classes will be recorded and you will have a lifetime access to them. You can still sign up here.
PS I’ve also recorded today a short video briefly explaining the Kalachakra Mandala. You can see it here.
